It’s been awhile since I ventured beyond the typical stores and restaurants I always visit, and when you’ve lived in the same area for an extended period of time, things can start to get pretty boring. It can be difficult to feel inspired when you’re seeing the same stuff day in and day out.
Out of this daily sameness, came the idea for this Creative Challenge. The idea is to find the strangest, most unique, out of the ordinary store you can find and go visit. So simple, and yet it’s something we tend to only do on vacations, not necessarily in the places where we live.
For my challenge, I found a creative reuse arts center called The Scrap Exchange.
This place was pretty magical, especially if you like rummaging through old junk for hidden treasures. There is a little bit of everything, and anything that can be recycled. Books, antiques, craft supplies, paper products, fabric, building materials, it’s a giant warehouse of junk. Heaven!
I especially loved the book section and came home with some wonderful vintage craft books. I also found a giant book of wallpaper samples with great textures that I plan on scanning and using in my work.
The whole trip turned out to be just the motivation I needed. Inspired by my visit (and a photo of the floor!) I created a photo album book cover, with a scrapbook feel to it.
New places bring about new ideas. I encourage you to find your own funky store nearby and see how it inspires you!
