Making a Pinapple Pattern Design

I find the story behind how a work of art came about as interesting as the work itself. There is art in the process, not just the final product. So part of what I like to share is how I make the things I make, and how I experiment with different ideas. For my pineapple pattern, I decided to come at it from two different angles. Sketching and playing with shapes.

First I looked at some pineapples, both in real life and on the internet. This is a photo I took at the grocery store:

Next I worked out some possible ideas in my sketchbook:

I noticed a lot of very geometric pineapple shapes in my internet searches, so I got out the pattern blocks to see what I could come up with.

At this point, I felt like I had a few strong contenders. I brought both my sketches and pattern block pineapples into Adobe Illustrator.

The final step was to add some color and create some repeats.

Thanks for checking out my work! You can also find it for sale in my shop.
